Don't End Up in a Career You Don't Love (77% of People Are Unhappy In Their Jobs)
Can you believe that according to a Gallup Poll, nearly 80% of people in the United States literally HATE their jobs? This is tragic. So why do you think that this happens to millions of college kids over and over, year after year, from the time they leave school and throughout their lives?
The way I see it, there are two major reasons.
1. People focus first on how they can make the most money, regardless of how much they may like or love what they will do.
2. Step 2 in the career exploration process is largely missing.
Let me say a few words about reason 2 first.
There are three big steps to take from high school to the world of careers, and only two of the steps are carefully designed for you.
Here is the first step: There is a clear process to determine what college you will attend. There are even college planners for those who can afford the help. Otherwise, you can learn a great deal about the colleges ahead of time, there is an abundance of info, and then you can VISIT THEM and see first hand how it feels to you, what the school atmosphere is like, the curriculum options, the people, etc….
Here is the second step: There is another systematic approach to finding work, once you choose what you want to do. There are career counseling centers in school, and numerous resources as well, that show you how to write a resume, what to say and not say during in interview, where and when to send resumes, cover letters, how and when to follow up etc…etc.
But WHERE is the clear method to help you discover what it is you would love to do, what you are meant to do, what will make your heart sing, where you can really wake up on Monday mornings with a sense of excitement, anticipation and fulfillment.
College gives you a chance to take different classes so you can begin to sense what might interest you, and then before you know it, you must declare a major. Then the pressure is on, regardless of whether you know what you want to do, what you would love to do, what you are meant to do.
So how easy is it to get caught sliding down the rabbit hole, forced to make a choice, no time, all the pressure, and then—WHAT A SURPRISE—you end up going down the wrong path.
Going back to the 1st reason why you may end up in the same place as the 77% of people polled by Gallup as hating their jobs: DON’T choose a career path based on potential earnings. If you make money your first priority, and consider what you will love later, studies show, you will likely be less successful, and less happy too. There is a high correlation between success and money, if you are in the right career for you. And if you choose the money route first, what are the chances you will be courageous enough to change career directions, shift your life direction? Can you imagine how much harder it will be if you now have a family, and responsibilities beyond yourself?
So, get it right the first time. Do the work. Visit us at oneTRUEzone, to find yours. Or find the program or process that can help you. It’s worth it! Trust me!! Been there, done that!
