Discover Your Ideal Career Path: Turn the Tables!! Be the Interviewer
DISCOVER YOUR IDEAL CAREER PATH:
TURN THE TABLES!!! BE THE INTERVIEWER
Let me share with you one of the BIG SECRETS of discovering your ideal career path: It’s called “Informational Interviewing.” What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s one of the best tools you can use for quickly finding the right path to your oneTRUEzone.
First, “Informational Interviewing” is NOT a job interview. It’s not where you go in and sit and answer a bunch of questions from a prospective employer. You are the one who is actually conducting the interview. You are in the driver’s seat. After all, this is your future that you are investigating. It is not meant to even cover for a job interview. You go in with the intent of learning first hand what exactly goes on in the company where the interviewee (that is not you) works and also to learn what the day-to-day experience is. What is the environment, do the other employees seem happy, stressed, or disengaged? What are the working conditions like? Can you imagine yourself working there? …But you are not on an interview.
How you get there to meet Mr. or Ms. Interviewee is key. You have already done some self-exploration and career analysis. You are narrowing your fields of potential interest. You are now further narrowing your scope of careers you may love, by learning first hand what the ‘work’ and environment is REALLY like, not just what you read about or heard about. But, because you already are engaged in the process of determining what you will love to do, and your intent is just to truly find what you WANT to do, what you may LOVE to do, you are the interviewer. Keep that in the forefront of your mind throughout the entire conversation.
When you are clear, crystal clear, that you don’t want this job, that you are only on a mission to find what will light you up, what will provide balance, fulfillment, fun, and money for you, (if that’s also a priority), then your confidence will show, you will do great, and you will get what you want: A clearer sense if this is the direction you want to pursue further. And guess what? The interviewee will respect that and admire you for that. Who knows what may come out of it down the road. Just keep your eye on YOU!!
