College well spent will never be a waste
Far too often, I have seen great kids disillusioned with their college experience. These students have worked hard, done what was expected (and sometimes even more than expected), and graduate feeling that their hard work and steep tuition were not worth the investment. The outcry may be worded differently, but the idea is the same: "College is a waste!” "It's too expensive!” "It's not worth it!" These refrains have only gotten louder and more prominent as the recession has taken its toll, and a college degree no longer guarantees a job, let alone a job that can lead to a personally and financially rewarding career.
Graduates with freshly minted college diplomas, typically have their eyes on just that, a career. However, too often the emphasis is not on a career that will help them to lead happy and satisfying lives, but on just landing a first job that will enable them to move from their parents’ home and pay their college loans. Accepting a first job…almost any job… frequently places young graduates on a career path that all too often is the wrong fit for long term happiness. Historically, this has always been a poor approach (statistics show that 80% of people are unhappy with their jobs/careers!). The result is often devastating, but not really surprising.
In today’s tough job market, it is easy to fall into the trap of just trying to land any reasonable job. However, not only can this be an error leading young people on the wrong path for long term success and happiness, but it can actually be a negative in landing an offer at all. When employers have their choice among so many well-educated students, they tend to choose not just the students who have the highest GPAs, or who went to the best colleges, but also give careful consideration to the candidates who are clear as to why they really want a particular position or field. A candidate who has put the time and effort into discovering the career path that is truly right for him or herself has a distinct and compelling advantage over every other candidate. Employers hire people that want to be in a position because it is their ideal work, not because it just happens to be work.
There are few places in life that offer the breadth and depth of resources to enhance knowledge like a university can and does. From libraries, to computers, trade journals, contacts, and professors, the tools are there to study almost anything you can imagine. If you are able to identify what that special something that calls to you is, before you are required to declare your major, college becomes a rich social, personal and intellectual experience; an exciting and valuable launch pad for your life!
We recognize how difficult is for young people to discover what calls them in life. Time and time again we have seen young adults graduate from college with no direction as to where they fit in among a vast array of careers. We have seen too many students who have been on the proverbial “five year plan”, because they could not commit to a major, significantly increasing the cost of obtaining their BS or BA.
